Forgotten roads or buildings usually then jump right into the eyes :-) It is the principle of a blink comparator http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blink_comparator
Would be nice if e.g. right-click on the eye-icon would allow switch on blinking, with the blink-rate definable in the settings.

Or at least having some keyboard-shortcut for toggling visibility of the active layer.
