#22793 new enhancement

[PATCH] Render boundary=place

Reported by: JeroenHoek Owned by: team
Priority: normal Milestone:
Component: Internal mappaint style Version:
Keywords: boundary place Cc:

Description (last modified by JeroenHoek)

Render boundary=place as a boundary. This tag originated in the Netherlands for use with boundaries of defined places (neighbourhoods and quarters) which lack administrative boundaries, but have formal boundaries nonetheless.

The tag is now in broad use all over the world with nearly 8000 instances, including in Estonia, Georgia, and Hell's Kitchen in New York.

The second patch adds the accompanying preset. It just mirrors what is done for the other boundaries, and thus uses the same icon as the rest.

Keywords: boundary place added

Well, Key:place is already allowed on areas. Why do we need Tag:boundary=place? Seems to be an unneeded duplicate in my eyes. I only find discussions on a local level (Netherlands). Was there any global discussion?

Overall, I prefer to have a default preset for major tags present in core mappaint which often comes down to find or create an appropriate icon.

It is used almost 8000 times, is well documented, and has been extensively discussed with consensus sought and found. The wiki-page even shows an example in Belgium.

This is really not the place to discuss its merits or demerits of this tag.

Overall, I prefer to have a default preset for major tags present […]

This is not a preset, just styling that prevents mappers from seeing a meaningless grey line. That helps prevent mappers making mistakes, and makes their mapping experience more pleasant.
