 * Turn off ""modeless working (potlatch style)"" in settings. Turn on ""Draw rubber-band helper line"" setting.
 * Create a single node by double-clicking on the edit layer.

A rubber-band will be displayed when you move your mouse cursor. However, clicking somewhere will start a new way, rather than connecting the new node to the first one as the rubber-band would suggest.
