When I added the grades in r14591/#16525 I used the French table instead:
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cotation_en_escalade#Table_de_comparaison
It doesn't make the distinction between different levels of 4. It matches with my own climbing experience.
I also excluded 1-2-3. Are these grades really used outside? I only though of them as purely theoretical.

Not really "climbing" to me...

Thanks for your reply.
I understand your concern and, from my own climbing experience, I never ever encountered a 1 or 2 grade. Grade 3 is mostly the "children area", which could make sense.
I used it with the "climbing:grade:french:min" tag here: https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/437303399 since there is actually a 3c grade route at this spot cf. https://www.camptocamp.org/waypoints/102840/fr/viaduc-des-fauvettes
Therefore we should add the 3 grade, and maybe 3c too.
Nevertheless I understand if you think that 3c doesn't really make sense, but I still encountered it.

OK to add grade 3 (+variants) and 4 variants as they exist in the real world (thanks for the link) and are used in OSM db: https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/climbing%3Agrade%3Afrench%3Amin#values
We both agree that grade 1/2 are pointless :)
