I have not been able to discover specifically what causes the problem.
First seen on v17329, now also on 17084.
Same problem on iMac and MacBook.

Normal operation.

==== What happens instead?
JOSM eventually becomes unresponsive after an hour or so of editing. Must force termination.
Activity monitor on Mac reporting >300% CPU for JOSM.
