 1. Perform a search
 2. Select one or two items from the selection box
 3. Do something with those
 4. Perform the same search again to get the initial set back (the search history is very helpful with this)

This workflow could however be optimized by adding a selection history feature to JOSM. The selection box could have back/forward buttons allowing the user to page through previously selected items (like Emacs's kill buffer), making the above:

  1. Perform a search
  2. Select one or two items from the selection box
  3. Do something with those
  4. Press ""back"" on the selection box
