Change USFS Roads background imagery

Reported by: Glassman Owned by: team

Description

The current background imagery provided by RichardF has an opaque background. New imagery is available with a transparent background making tracing more accurate. I did discuss this with Richard. He is okay with making the change. I was going to edit the wiki to change the entry but I don't have permissions.

I will attached a file with the new entries. This is the first time I tried to create a data url for a icon. I used site http://software.hixie.ch/utilities/cgi/data/data to create the base64 data.

You have rights to change that. What message do you get so that you assumed you have no rights?

comment:2 by Glassman, 6 years ago

I don't see an edit option on the page. Reading the wiki, it said that not all pages are editable by everyone. I assumed that the map page was one of those.

comment:3 by stoecker, 6 years ago

No. Even an anonymous user can edit these pages. Did you scroll down to the bottom? Which page are we talking about?

Replying to Don-vip:

Maps/USA#U.S.ForestServiceroads I guess?

I fear it is maps, that's why I asked :-)

Please minify the png file before you convert it to base64, see wiki:Help/Base64

I found the edit button - I can't believe I missed that. After minifying the png file, the wiki page has be updated.

The both sources are very different. We should better add both instead to "misuse" one entry.

We have now 3 URLs under (nearly) the same name, but which show quite different data, i.e. (partly) other roads are displayed:

overwritten in josm and still in ELI
https://osm.cycle.travel/forest/{zoom}/{x}/{y}.png
now in josm
https://{switch:a,b,c,d}.tiles.mapbox.com/styles/v1/glassman/cjfflyvqf16hu2rnq6bk3yi4t/tiles/256/{zoom}/{x}/{y}@2x?access_token=pk.eyJ1IjoiZ2xhc3NtYW4iLCJhIjoiRjk3dWdwYyJ9.Tg_fMJWxygeKBgVTrZHmGA
added in ELI
https://api.mapbox.com/styles/v1/glassman/cjf4qjmps0tgv2qpahj977mvz/tiles/256/{zoom}/{x}/{y}?access_token=pk.eyJ1IjoiZ2xhc3NtYW4iLCJhIjoiRjk3dWdwYyJ9.Tg_fMJWxygeKBgVTrZHmGA

Glassman, could you please clarify this?

@Glassman

Can you please comment?

@Klumbumbus - thanks for pointing pointing out the difference. You are correct - the url I provided was for USFS Trails. I wasn't planning on publishing that one quite yet. I've updated the Wiki.

@stoecker - thanks for the reminder.

Ok, now we have a fourth URL:
https://{switch:a,b,c,d}.tiles.mapbox.com/styles/v1/glassman/cjf4qjmps0tgv2qpahj977mvz/tiles/256/{zoom}/{x}/{y}?access_token=pk.eyJ1IjoiZ2xhc3NtYW4iLCJhIjoiRjk3dWdwYyJ9.Tg_fMJWxygeKBgVTrZHmGA

But I suppose that could be merged with

https://api.mapbox.com/styles/v1/glassman/cjf4qjmps0tgv2qpahj977mvz/tiles/256/{zoom}/{x}/{y}?access_token=pk.eyJ1IjoiZ2xhc3NtYW4iLCJhIjoiRjk3dWdwYyJ9.Tg_fMJWxygeKBgVTrZHmGA

(only {switch:a,b,c,d}.tiles. vs. api.)

The problem right now is that I get only grey tiles from both URLs. arrrhhh... can't updating imagery entries be quick and simple only once? 😫
